e-newsletter - February 2012
Gong Xi Fa Cai, Gung Hay Fat Choy or Happy Chinese New Year to all our members & friends. Special greetings to any 'Dragon babies' among you, as we embark on the auspicious 'Year of the Dragon'.

Last month we mentioned the Christmas cards we received from the Wittayala School. This month, we thank the students of the Satree School for their New Year's cards and best wishes.
The cards are all handmade and beautifully done.

We have reproduced a selection of them in this month's newsletter so you can appreciate the talent and creativity of the students.
SCHOLARSHIP NEWS
We are coming to that time of year when we finalise the amount of funds available for the awarding of new scholarships. It's been a challenging but, ultimately, successful year, due to the wonderful generosity of our members, friends and sponsors and the hard work of our fundraising committee. If you would like to know more about the scholarship programme, please come along to our AGM at Le Meridien, of which more details below.
FUNDRAISING
Lunches
The January lunch at the Evason was a huge success with many members reporting it as the 'best lunch ever' (and these ladies have high standards!). The lunch raised 16,600 baht for the Scholarship fund, including 9,100 from the raffle. The most sought after raffle prize was Tonic Water – which has become a rare commodity on the island since the recent floods in Bangkok!
Special thanks are due to our ticket sellers Khun Porn & Khun Nittaya, whose trojan efforts each month ensure the raffles continue to be such a success.
The February lunch will be at Cudos Restaurant in Surin on 16th February. Lotta Ruthberg has kindly agreed to co-ordinate the bookings as Carole will be away, so please contact her on info@phuketiwc.com
The March lunch will be held after the AGM on 15th March at Le Meridien Hotel, Nai Harn, while the April lunch will be held at a new restaurant in Kata called Ra Ka Ta. More details to follow.
For updates, please check PIWC website, www.phuketiwc.com, our Facebook page or Phuket Gazette where information will be posted once available.
SOCIAL STUFF
Gardening Group
Undaunted, this intrepid group is already planning the next trip. It is proposed to visit Tanyamundra Khao Sok National Park. No further information is available yet, please keep checking the website www.phuketiwc.com and our Facebook page where details will be posted in due course.

K. Juree led an 11 member expedition to the beautiful Thaphom Klong Song Nam in Krabi. A great day was had by all, in spite of the boat trip element of the tour having to be cancelled due to the general 'unseaworthiness' (is that a word?) of said boat.
K. Juree would also like to arrange more visits to members' gardens. The proposal would be to visit 2-3 gardens in the south of the island in a single day and then a similar visit to 2-3 gardens in the north one day the following month. If anyone would be interested in taking part and/or opening up your garden to the group, please contact K. Juree on wongprom.jureewan@gmail.com
Coffee Morning
Many thanks to Maria Kranker for opening up her home for this month's coffee morning. There was a great turnout with almost 30 ladies there to sample her lovely Scandinavian fare.
Our coffee mornings are always popular, providing a comfortable, casual environment for our members to chat and get to know one another. If you would like to host one, please contact info@phuketiwc.com and a member of the committee will contact you to discuss further.
Meet and Greet
The meet and greet has been very busy lately and this month's is expected to be no exception. Just turn up at Starbuck's in Central next Thursday 9th February at 10:00 for coffee and a chat with new, potential and existing members.
Cooking Lesson
Khun Noi of Tawai in Cherngtalay has kindly offered to run another Thai Cooking evening for members. It will be held on Thursday 23rd February at 5:00p.m. for 5:30p.m. The price is 700 baht per person. Tawai is also offering us wine at 160 baht per glass and spirits at 100 baht per glass. These events are always very popular and there are only 16 'cooking' places, so first come first served. Please contact Carole to book your place. Additional guests are welcome for dinner at 7:00p.m. at a price of 500 baht.
MEMBERS
This month we have one new member, Dianne Buerger from Australia. Welcome Dianne!
Carole Fryer has asked us to keep her little granddaughter in our thoughts and prayers as she fights leukaemia in the UK.
Diane Danesoe has asked us to thank the members for their good wishes and reports that her husband Peter is improving.
