Full scholarships awarded to students cover tuition fees, uniforms, books and stationary, lunches when appropriate and any other educational expenses. The scholarships are not intended to cover luxury items or other non-educational materials sometimes asked for by the parents of younger children. The director of the school or college chooses candidates for selection of PIWC scholarships. They are students who perform well in their schoolwork but for personal financial reasons are unable to continue their education. The teachers involved visit the homes of the students to determine the most needy. Names are given to the PIWC. Each year the club decides on the number of students for whom there are sufficient funds. To ensure continuity of each student’s education a fund is set up to cover the number of years of the academic course. (The Fixed Scholarship Fund). Occasionally the club is approached directly by a student who has heard about the scholarships from friends or in newspaper articles. In such cases application is made by letter to the scholarship coordinator, who then visits the home of the applicant to determine the needs of the students. PIWC Charity Fund The charity fund, separate from the scholarship fund, provides support for the needy schools in the province. This support may be requested by the director of a school and assessed by the committee. The support may consist of the purchase of educational equipment and materials needed by the school for the students’ use, or lunch supplements to help the more needy students. In this way the club can give assistance to a greater number of younger underprivileged children attending primary school. Many of these children had received support immediately after the Tsunami, and continued help is still required, as many are being taken care of by other members of the family or in some cases complete strangers. A few more applicants are constantly being put forward either by teachers or by the benefits officer at the local Or Bor Tor, called Kuhn Mary. These students fill in a form giving their personal details, and with the help of our Thai scholarship members, are translated are carefully reviewed by the scholarship committee for agreement.

The first annual scholarship presentation of the PIWC took place at Satree Phuket School in August.
This was the culmination of the work done by the scholarship and fund raising committees.
in Hat Yai managed to come back for the weekend but many of those studying further away were not able to attend.
Many of the sponsors were able to attend and award their designated students with their certificates.
One of our previous recipients, a nurse who is now working at the Vachira Hospital also came along to express her gratitude and let everyone know what it has meant to her and how the scholarship has changed her life. She has come back to Phuket to work and give back to the community. Her speech was very moving to all present.
